Iron deficiency is a state where the body lacks iron to support normal physiological functions. Without adequate iron, the body cannot produce enough hemoglobin , if left unmanaged it can lead to iron deficiency anemia.

Role of iron in the Human body

Iron is a vital mineral that the body needs for growth and development . it’s primary job is to help carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and muscles , allowing one to convert food into energy                 Iron is indispensable for several vital bodily functions which may include:

1. Oxygen transport and storage

Majority of iron is used to build hemoglobin , which transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. It also forms myoglobin , a protein that stores and release oxygen directly into muscle tissue.

2. Energy production

Iron act as a vital cofactor for enzymes in the mitochondria ,helping the body convert food into unstable energy (ATP).

3. Cognitive Function

Iron is necessary for neurotransmitter synthesis (like dopamine and serotine) and is critical for brain development in children and memory in adults.

4. Immunity

Iron is facilitate the maturation of immune cells, helping the body defend against infections.

Understanding Iron deficiency

Iron deficiency is the depletion of the body’s iron stores. Anemia only occurs when those iron levels drop so low that hemoglobin levels fall below standard threshold. It develops over time progressively in 3 different stages, moving from a mild depletion of the body’s reserve to a systematic shortage that imparts red blood cell production. This decline occurs slowly over several months as the body’s iron output outpaces its intake.

Three progressive stages of Iron deficiency

Stage 1: iron Depletion (MILD)

In the initial stage, the body intake falls short of its needs, forcing the body to rely on its stored iron. In this stage, Iron reserves in the bone marrow and liver are slowly used up to maintain normal daily functions. The serum ferritin is low but hemoglobin and RBC counts are normal. There are no noticeable symptoms though some individuals may feel a slight decrease in exercise tolerance .

Stage 2: iron –Deficient Erythropoiesis (latent Deficiency )

If iron loss continuous or intake remains poor, stored iron is entirely exhausted , imparing the production of RBC. In this stage, with no backup stores, the body struggles to provide enough iron to the bone marrow ,causing new RBC to be smaller in size and lacking sufficient hemoglobin ,due to which serum levels drop, and transferrin increasing ,resulting low transferrin saturation .

Stage 3:Iron deficiency Anemia (overt deficiency )

This is the most severe and advanced stage of iron deficiency in which the body’s circulating iron is drastically low, and Hemoglobin levels fall below the normal range . RBC are fewer, smaller and pale. Abnormally low hemoglobin ,low hematocrit and severely depleted iron stores. Noticeable symptoms occur because the blood cannot properly carry oxygen.

Causes of Iron Deficiency

1) Inadequate Dietary intake

Inadequate dietary intake is one of the primary causes of iron deficiency. It happen when one don’t consume enough iron-rich foods to meet the body daily requirement. Because the body cannot produce iron of its own ,it relies entirely on the diet to maintain healthy stores.

2) Increased iron requirement

An increased requirement for iron without a corresponding increase in dietary intake or absorption directly causes iron deficiency . when the body’s demand for iron exceeds its supply, it depletes stored iron ,ultimately limiting the production of haemoglobin and leading to iron deficiency anemia.

3) Blood loss

Blood loss is one of the most common causes of iron deficiency . Because a majority of iron in the body is stored in the RBC, losing blood directly means losing the body’s iron supply . if one loose blood faster than the body can replenish, it absorb iron from the diet ,a deficiency develops.
