Benefits
Hepatitis B comes from a liver infection. The virus behind it is called HBV.
People spread it in several ways. That includes from mother to child during birth. It also happens through shared needles or syringes. Unprotected sex can transmit it too. Tattoos and body piercings carry a risk if tools are not clean. Even sharing contaminated razors or toothbrushes might do it.
This infection can turn serious over time. Still, it does not always cause obvious symptoms right away.
Doctors give the vaccine by injecting it into a muscle. They recommend it soon after someone faces a risk of exposure.
Health experts suggest it for all infants at birth. Children up to age eighteen should get it as well. Adults in high risk groups need protection too.
The vaccine will not work if a person already carries hepatitis B.
